Actually if you translate maiden to german you will get jungfräulich (virginlike) or mädchenhaft (girly) but not girl. And that's something I did not know either. If you'd asked me I'd answered Magd as the translation for maiden (which is a legit translation as well). Mädchen as a translation of girl is right and just as commonly used. :) (Although youth magazines tend to use 'girl' and 'boy' because that's just so stylish... ugh!)
